The other day, the Esmeralda left Valpo with a cargo full of lucky new Chilean Naval Officers on a round the world jolly. They get to sail a tall ship to far-flung destinations for 9 months or so. Not a bad life...
So here is the Esmeralda arriving in Valparaiso last December (in time for New Year when it is beautifully illuminated).
And leaving again.

Nice, I have never seen it in person but a friend left on this trip (I think he said he would be gone just til August or so).
Anyway the thing I find most interesting is that they paint it again every time its docked!
Hmmm, only August? Maybe they only turn up in Valpo around December? Or maybe there's a change of personnel half way through?
I didn't know they painted it every time...what a pain in the arse...
A friend of ours went on the 2008 trip on La Esmeralda. Brendan and I went to say hello and welcome him to the port. The experience was very nice! The sailors leave singing and everybody gets very emotional (of course). On the way back, the families are waiting for La Esmeralda to arrive. They all have signs welcoming their sons. When the boat is about to enter the pier, all the sorrounding boats fog horns and people cheering. Very beautiful!
