Unlocking Your iPhone in Chile

I bought my iPhone way back in October and unlocked it for use with any SIM card without any hassles (apart from the waiting and hoping that it wouldn't brick itself). It never really occurred to me that other people in Chile might be wanting to unlock their iPhones as well until a friend proudly showed me his iPhone...I asked him what network he was on and he said he couldn't unlock it. Oh dear...anyway, as luck would have it, the latest unlocking tools for Out The Box (OTB) Versions 1.1.2 and 1.1.3 had just been released, so I pointed him in the right direction and hey presto! an unlocked iPhone.

So if you want to know how to unlock your iPhone for use with any sim card just take a look at the following links for step by step instructions. It's actually really easy and it's freeeeeeeeeeeee (although i'd suggest doing the decent thing and donating a couple of quid to the super-geeks whose hard work has made it all possible).

To upgrade from 1.0.2 to 1.1.1 click here

The master resource for downgrading, upgrading, unlocking and modding your iPhone.

A forum full of useful resources but it's frustratingly slow at times for some reason.

This is the newest way of doing it and it's not a method i have personally tested.

Happy Unlocking..!

There's been a lot of speculation about why the sales figures that Apple's been giving out for the iPhone and the activation figures from the mobile service providers don't match.

But, yeah, the answer's pretty simple: Anywhere from 10-25% of the phones Apple's selling are getting unlocked and used all over creation: China, Canada . . . and at least a few in Chile evidently!

Yeah, i think it was around 25% the figure that i last heard of phones that had been purchased but hadn't opened an account with the company foisted on them by Apple. Clearly, if Apple actually cared about this, it'd have made it obligatory to sign up for a contract before taking the phone home but they didn't do this and they knew it would get cracked-it was the ultimate meganerd challenge. They probably also knew that quite a few people would knacker their phones by trying to unlock and would have to buy new ones...

And i can't imagine AT&T being too unhappy either-Apple sold 1.4 million iphones in 2007 so that's around 1 million new AT&T customers. Not bad going. Although no one knows how much they invested in the product or paid for the exclusive rights.

And it is a pretty awesome little thing, much better than a Crackberry.

This is an old post, I know. But I'm moving to Chile and would like to know about (unlocked) iPhone functionality, reasonableness of data plans, and all that. How does using an unlocked iPhone in Chile differ from using a factory iPhone on AT&T?

Thanks!

My plan costs about us$45 for 400 minutes of calls and unlimited data (although it slows to a crawl after 100mb). If you don't have permanent residency or a friend who will put the contract in their name though, it's all moot how much the plans are as you won't have access to them. You will only be able to get a pay as you go plan which is more expensive (although I have no idea how much).

Difference between an unlocked iphone and a factory otb? Nothing as far as I can see.
