Valpo For A Day

On Saturday, I went for a very quick trip to Valpo for a friend's housewarming party. He bought a place on Cerro Mariposa, not an area I'd recommend for buying property in Valparaiso, to be honest. But his renovation job was awesome and the views of the port and the Pacific from the house are amazing.

Things seem to be changing in Valpo, but at the customary snail's pace...and it's almost all private investment that's happening. It's clear the Municipalidad isn't really doing anything at all to improve the city. I hope that'll change some day, but I really doubt it.

It was great to catch up with friends still in Valpo. Hopefully, I'll be there longer next time so I can see the friends I missed. Here are a few photos from the trip. Enjoy.

Views from a friend's house on Cerro Alegre:

That's my old house. The person who bought it decided to completely renovate the freshly renovated house, at great expense. He's currently completely ripping it apart...It's going to be lovely, I'm sure, but he's clearly crazy...

That's a giant fish...

Valpo looks really nice and was that a completed fish or were they just starting on it.

I actually lived on Cerro Mariposa for a while. While I understand not encouraging people to invest there-- it is a nice little community and there were things I loved about it.

Hi there, Hola from New Zealand. I'm a Chilean living here and was just searching for photos of Valparaiso, a place where I would love to buy a house some day, those old Victorian houses, to die for :)
Anyway, its so nice to read about Chile and its 'ways' of life from a non-Chilean. I've been away from Chile for so long that I'm a foreigner when I go there. Anyway, I need to go to Stgo this year, and really want to go to Vlpso. My grandmother has a house in Playa Ancha, the views to the sea are amazing... lets hope they are still there! I saw the photos of the renovation of your house, very nice :) Love those wooden floors.
Elizabeth.

Thanks for your comment Elizabeth!

Bluegreen- the fish was completed, it was being installed as I turned up.

Clare- yes, it's ok up there and the views are incredible...it's just not an area I'd suggest investing in.

I'm absolutely agree with you. Honestly I think Municipality is just a big disaster. They are facing bankrupcity and all citizens are suffering its consequences. I can't understand why foreigners still come here, really.
